U.S. Gold $20 Liberty 1850-1889

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2467
1850 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. A near mint state example of this first collectible year of issue of the Type I double eagle series (the 1849 being the first year of issue but also not collectible by really any means) The obverse surfaces are semi-prooflike and display a mixture of light hairlines and original die polish lines. The light greenish-gold coloration is pleasing and enhanced by the reflectivity of the fields. Liberty's device is boldly struck with all hair detail and lettering sharp. A small circular nick is noted on the upper cheek and there is a short tick mark in the field right of star 6. The reverse is extremely lustrous and unquestionably uncirculated in condition. A heavily frosty texture is seen over the fields and devices. There is a small patch of planchet roughness above the D. of TWENTY D. An extremely attractive example of this always popular Type I issue! Housed in an old PCGS green label holder. PCGS population of 53 in AU-55. Only 18 have been graded AU-58 by PCGS and only 45 in all uncirculated grades (PCGS # 8902) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Rich orange-gold surfaces with finely granular texture. Everything struck to the sharpest degree. One can almost envision stacks of these newly minted double eagles being loaded onto the S.S. Central America. Prior to the discovery and recovery of the S.S. Central America treasure a Type I double eagle in this condition was unheard of and reserved for only the deepest of pockets.

Frosty Uncirculated 1858 $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. A fully struck and frosty mint state Type I double eagle. Rich gold coloration with a touch of reddish-orange toning at and near the date. Mesmerizing luster and satiny surfaces are held back from a higher grade by light hairlines on the obverse. Definetely not the normal "slider" coin. The 1858 Type I double eagle is quite rare in accurately graded mint state condition. Not nearly as common as the 1851, 1852 or 1853 in uncirculated condition, the 1858 is a little undervalued in choice MS61. Double eagle collectors and gold enthusiasts will appreciate the originality and flash of this example! NGC population of 11 in MS-61, 1 in MS-62 and 1 in MS-63 as finest.

1858-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. A deep orange and lustrous piece. Violet toning on the numerals of the date. Well struck with significantly less abrasions than normally observed. A scarce issue that has not had its total population increased by shipwreck discoveries. PCGS has graded 30 in AU-55 with 33 finer. Only a handful of truly mint state examples survive and they are substantially more expensive than a nice AU, such as this coin (PCGS # 8925) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.

1867 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. Loaded with luster and full mint bloom. A low mintage Type II Philadelphia issue with a mintage of only 251,015 that was struck one year after the beginning of the With Motto double eagles. Well struck with every star sharp and completely raised. Unquestionably mint state in preservation, this 1867 example is one of few that have managed to survive to the mint state level. Frosty surfaces with the original skin 100% intact. The typical abrasions and scattered contact marks of MS61-62 double eagles. Completely original deep orange gold coloration simply adds to the already outstanding eye appeal of this Type II double eagle rarity. Very choice for the assigned grade of MS61. PCGS has never graded an 1867 $20 above MS62 (PCGS # 8951) .

1870-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. Soft golden surfaces that are original and swimming with luster. Olive iridescence in the obverse periphery. All surfaces are satiny, lustrous and uninterrupted by abrasions. The 1870-S is a scarce and undervalued Type II double eagle and they seldom come this nice, technically or aesthetically. The cheek of Liberty is nearly free from friction and close to uncirculated in quality. Luster is equal to that found on low mint state pieces. PCGS has never graded an example higher than MS61 and bidders should carefully inspect this choice specimen. PCGS population of 46 in AU-58, 6 in MS-60 and 9 in MS-61 as the finest (PCGS # 8959) .

1876 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. An extremely lustrous and frosty uncirculated example of a Philadelphia issue that is rarely seen higher than the present grade. Liberty is completely covered in mint frost and the entire obverse has a cameo-like appearance. A short diagonal tick on the chin and another on the lower jawbone are the only significant marks to mention. The reverse has the same appealing characteristics and we note a small scuff just right of F in OF for identification. 1882-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Finely granular fields with rolling luster and the most delicate of rose, blue and teal hues. The 1882-S is readily available up to the MS61-MS62 grade range but choice MS-62 examples and above are quite rare. Having dealt in a great many number of San Francisco Type III double eagles, this cataloguer feels this is one of the more pleasing examples seen. Lustrous and bold with minimal bag marks and no hairlines. PCGS has graded 164 in MS-62, 7 in MS-63 and a single MS-64 as the finest (PCGS # 8998) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,200.

1882-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Warm rose gold coloration over semi-reflective fields and hints of a rich orange toning at the peripheries. Well struck with full hair detail. The reverse is a little bit more choppy than the obverse, most notably by a scuff underneath IC of AMERICA and another vertically right of the shield. The 1880-1882 San Francisco double eagles frequently come with semi-reflective fields and this leads to them generally appearing a little more abraded. Regardless of the more visible abrasions, collectors prefer to acquire these issues with proof-like qualities. The 1882-S is about twice as rare as the 1880-S and 1881-S in terms of overall rarity but in high grades it is still extremely rare, almost never seen above MS62. This pleasing example should receive very healthy bidding from double eagle enthusiasts. PCGS population of 167 in MS-62, 9 in MS-63 and a single MS-64 as finest (PCGS # 8998) .

1885-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. A rare Carson City double eagle and a year in which only 9,450 were produced. Moderate hairlines over the fields from a light wipe. Detail is correctly graded for the AU category and the luster on both the obverse and reverse is of a higher grade. Three vertical tick marks rest on the cheek near the hair.
